What I Learned From Doing Nothing for a Weekend

Leaning into the power of rest and mental recharge.

This past weekend, I did something radical. I did… nothing.
Not the productive kind of “nothing” where you clean out your junk drawer while watching Netflix.
Not the accidental nothing that happens when you scroll TikTok for three hours in bed and suddenly it’s dark out.
I mean real, intentional, gloriously uneventful nothing.

And guess what? The world kept turning.

In fact, I think it spun a little more peacefully.

I didn’t realize how addicted I was to being busy until I tried to slow down. Like many of us, I wear my to-do list like a badge of honor.
Productivity is practically a personality trait. So choosing to stop…on purpose, felt awkward at first.
Guilty, even.

But here’s the thing: when we rest, we’re not giving up.
We’re gearing up. Doing nothing is not a failure of hustle; it’s an investment in resilience.

At first, the silence was loud. Without my usual rush of errands, texts, and notifications, my thoughts felt like a messy room I’d been avoiding. But once I sat with them for a bit …without judgment…they softened.
I found ideas floating to the top I didn’t know I had. I wrote some down. I let others go. It felt like a mental exhale.

Turns out, boredom can be a breeding ground for creativity. Who knew?

I didn’t realize how many of my aches and anxieties were linked to just going all the time. I traded errands for naps. Replaced multitasking with long, meandering walks. I even ate meals without also doing three other things (yes, I sat down at a table like a real adult).

It reminded me that rest isn’t just good for the soul. It’s good for literally everything else.

Here’s the unexpected twist: doing nothing didn’t make life feel smaller. It made it feel fuller. A quiet moment with coffee. A breeze through the open window. The way the light changed at 7 PM. None of these things would’ve registered on my usual schedule, but they were magic.

It made me wonder how much of my life I’ve been rushing through just to cross something off.

🌿 Final Takeaway

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, overstimulated – or just meh – here’s your official permission slip to do absolutely nothing for a weekend. No itinerary. No guilt. Just stillness.

And don’t worry. The laundry will still be there Monday.
But you? You’ll be a whole lot more you again.

Thank you for posting this! I needed to hear it🥹 I feel the same way, like I need to be doing something more all the time... Life isn't all about what we can cross off our lists! (The OCD side of me as I'm writing this is already going crazy! 😆) But just simply BE and BREATHE! ❤️ I appreciate this blog and I will hold it dear to my heart as I go through these next summer weeks 🫶 #WhyIRyze #BorntoShine #UnleashTheSparkle✨

This is something that took me a while to learn! That's the main reason the hubby and I decided to semi retire and downsize to our tiny home in the woods! Don't feel bad for protecting your soul...
